At Ridgewood High School in New Jersey several female students sent multiple nude photos of themselves to at least one male student, which has prompted a police investigation regarding issues of child pornography and distribution.

According to Patch.com, several parents and students stated that on Wednesday, female students sent nude photos to male students using the "Snapchat" application, only to then find them on the Internet.

While the "Snapchat" application for iPhone destroys images within 10 seconds of opening the image, the receiver is able to take a "screenshot," which is essentially just a photo of whatever is on the receiver's screen at the time. This photo will immediately be saved to the receiver's cellphone. Although, when the photo sent via "Snapchat" is saved, the sender receives a message alerting them that the photo has been screen shot and thus saved.

In this case, a male student, still unidentified, was expecting the images of his nude classmates. So, after receiving the messages, he screenshot the images, thus saving them to his cell phone. With the nude images saved, he posted the photos to an online gallery through, yet another phone application, "Instagram."

School administrators at Ridgewood high became aware of the issue and began an investigation with Ridgewood police. Ridgewood Superintendent, Dan Fishbein, told Patch.com on Wednesday "these incidents happened off school grounds and are being handled by the police .. If it is determined that students broke school rules then we would handle that administratively as we do with all student issues."

Fishbein sent a letter home to parents and students stating that the police have decided upon an "amnesty period." Students who have the images must delete them before the amnesty period ends at 7 a.m. on Monday or face possible prosecution for possessing/distributing child pornography.
