If you haven’t yet heard of “Reign,” let me fill you in, it is the teenage version of “Game of Thrones” meets “The Tudors.” And with a teenaged viewership, comes teenaged censorship. While HBO and Showtime seldom shy away from racy, and sometimes downright, raucous sex scenes, the CW has limits, well sexually. “Reign”, which is based on the life and rule of Mary Queen of Scots, premieres on the CW on October 17, but the pilot episode audiences will see is vastly different from the NSFW version originally filmed. The pilot episode chronicles young Mary as she arrives in France and is betrothed to Francis. Joining her in the mysterious France are her three best friends, who serve as her ladies in waiting.
The promiscuous and now deleted scene occurs shortly after Mary and the girls arrive in France, the 15-year-old witness a bedding ceremony. And as formal as it may sound, a bedding ceremony is anything but. The historical accurate ceremony occurred after a wedding, when the newly married man and wife would engage in sex in order to consummate their marriage. After witnessing the passionate bedding ceremony, Mary and her ladies in waiting are intrigued in their own growing bodies.
The girls separate awkwardly after witnessing such a rousing display and decide to retire to different areas of the castle in order to please themselves. The one friend of Mary’s that is featured during this activity is Kenna, who is shown going to a secluded stairwell where she hikes up her long royal gown and begins to reach down, before she is hastily interrupted by the much older King of France who boldly asks “May I?” The unlikely pair then engage in sexual intercourse.
If you think this sexy scene is bad, it is nothing to what was originally set to air. According to Entertainment Weekly, “Reign” will now only allude to Keena’s intended actions, in a few quick shots, you may think you know what she is going to do. The show then shifts after the deleted moments, from "I can't believe they're actually showing this" to "was she doing what I think she was doing?"
Viewers will not be seeing the masturbation scene, however the pilot episode will still have a lot of hot and heavy themes. "Reign" stars Adelaide Kane as Mary, Toby Regbo as Prince Francis, Torrance Coombs as Bash, Megan Follows as Queen Catherine, Alan Van Sprang as King Henry, Celina Sinden as Greer, Caitlin Stasey as Kenna, Anna Popplewell as Lola, and Jenessa Grant as Aylee. The series will premiere on the CW on October 17 at 9 pm.
