TMZ released the arrest video showing America's Sweetheart, Reese Witherspoon, mouthing off to a cop and then getting handcuffed.
The "Sweet Home Alabama" star was out with her husband James Toth when the pair was pulled over by a Georgia State Trooper. Reports from various media outlets, including Latin Times, said that the 37-year-old actress was being belligerent toward the Georgia cop and even pulled the "do you know who I am" card.
In the Reese Witherspoon arrest video, the reports are confirmed. Witherspoon is mouthing off to the cop and is clearly not in any state where she (and her husband) should have been driving. While the camera is rolling, Witherspoon gets out of the car to see why her husband is getting arrested. The officer tells her to get back in the car but the "Cruel Intentions" actress refused saying,
"I'm a U.S. citizen I am allowed to stand on American ground and ask any question I want to ask."
Obviously annoyed with Reese Witherspoon's attitude the Georgia state trooper says, "Go ahead, come on" and grabs Witherspoon's arm folding it behind her back to put her in handcuffs.
As the officer was cuffing Reese Witherspoon she said to him, "You better not arrest me. Are you kidding me?"
"Nope," the officer replies as he drags Witherspoon off. All the while Reese Witherspoon is still going on about how she is an American citizen, ranting, "This is beyond, this is beyond, I have done nothing against the law."
As the officer was taking Witherspoon toward his patrol car she asked him, "Do you know my name sir?" The officer responded, "Don't need to know it."
Witherspoon kept going on about how the officer was about to find out who she is and how she couldn't believe what was happening. The officer informed her she was obstructing justice and placed her in the back of the car. At this point in Witherspoon's arrest video you can only hear what is going on. The camera is mounted on the dashboard of the cop car and only Toth is in view.
After placing Witherspoon in the car, the officer returns to her husband who says, "I had nothing to do with that."
TMZ released Reese Witherspoon's arrest video on YouTube. So far the video has 321,211 views and the number is growing.
Witherspoon is usually a very poised and serious actress. With the exception of her 2006 divorce from "Cruel Intensions" co-star Ryan Phillippe, Witherspoon tends to stay out of the tabloid dramatics.
In order to nip what happened in Georgia in the bud, Witherspoon talked about her arrest on Good Morning America.
Witherspoon told the morning show, "We went out to dinner and had one too many glasses of wine. We thought we were fine to drive and we absolutely were not and it's just completely unacceptable. We are so sorry and embarrassed and we know better."
This is why Reese Witherspoon is still America's sweetheart. She made a mistake and owned up to it. Being in the public eye, this could have gone a lot worse for Witherspoon. Her public apology shows she is smart enough to admit when she is wrong and clean up her own mess.
