Gareth Bale is considered one of the best soccer players in the world and as a player who can play on both ends of the field at a high level, it should come as no surprise that the 24-year-old was the focal point of an interesting transfer period. Rising in popularity as a member of the Tottenham Spurs, Bale was highly coveted during the offseason by premier clubs including Manchester United and Real Madrid. After a long stretch of talks however, Real Madrid is finally prepared to complete a record deal for the former White Hart Lane star.
According to Yahoo Sports, Tottenham and Real Madrid have finally agreed to a substantial fee after a long timeframe of discussions. Coming to terms on a reported £86 million, Real Madrid is now one step closer to acquiring a player the club holds in such high regard. Though the two sides had previously discussed the transfer of multiple players, Bale is the only one making a move as this deal has become strictly financial and no Real players will travel to the Spurs.
Arriving in Spain on Saturday night prior to finalizing his record deal, the midfielder will now await the official announcement which is set to come on Tuesday. Though Real Madrid will certainly receive a player with a tremendous skill set and someone they hope will fit perfectly with Cristiano Ronaldo, some people associated with the sport feel the deal - which surpasses the 2009 agreement of £80m between Real and Ronaldo - is too extreme.
"Bale is a very good player," Barcelona manager Gerardo Martino said recently. "But the numbers themselves involved in this transfer show a lack of respect to the world in general."
Believed to be a six-year contract, The Telegraph notes that Bale will receive a fee of £8.5 million per season before taxes.
