Real Madrid has reportedly sent a letter to FIFA asking for its president Sepp Blatter to apologize for comments made to the Oxford University Union on Friday, according to coach Carlo Ancelotti. Blatter had been asked who he thought was a better player -- Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi - to which the FIFA president had responded with a long answer in which he appeared to make light of Ronaldo's personal hygiene and style of play before concluding that although he appreciated both players and could not say who was better, he preferred Messi. "They are both exceptional players, but they are totally different. They are totally different stars," said Blatter. "Lionel Messi is a good boy, that every father and every mother would like to take home. He's a good man, he's very fast, and he's not exuberant, he's playing well, he's dancing. He's a kind man, a good boy. That's what makes him so popular, and naturally he'll always get a lot of votes because he plays well and scores goal. The other one is something else. He is like a commander on the field of play."

The FIFA president then rose from his seat on the stage and executed a mock, commander-like march, to laughter and applause from the audience. He sat down again and continued, "This is the other side of football and it's good to have commanders on the field. They don't have the same attitude and that gives life to football. One has more expenses for the hairdresser than the other but that doesn't matter. I can't say who is the best - there will be a contest again this year and then January next year it will be announced. I like both of them, but I prefer Messi."

Carlo Ancelotti told a news conference previewing Wednesday's La Liga game with Sevilla that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez had written to FIFA asking for a rectification of Blatter's comments, which according to Ahram Online, Perez characterized as showing a "lack of respect to a very serious and very professional player". The coach added, "I am completely in agreement with my president," and said although he hadn't spoken to Ronaldo about the incident, he had "trained very well today, as always". According to Inside Spanish Football, no official response has been returned by FIFA. Balon d'Or candidates were released last night, with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo among favorites for the award.
