SEATTLE - For the first time since 2020, two of the four teams left standing in the UEFA Champions League semifinals come from Germany. After a disappointing season at the domestic level, Bayern Munich has somehow sealed a place in another European Cup semifinal thanks to a goal from Joshua Kimmich.
The last tie of the quarterfinal round was decided in penalties, as Real Madrid and Manchester City couldn't be separated at the end of the second leg. "Los Blancos" suffered all game but came out on top in the penalty shootout, winning 4-3.
Real Madrid 1-1 Manchester City (Real Madrid advances 4-3 on penalties)
- Real Madrid: advances to its 33rd European Cup semifinal; they have 12 more such appearances than any other team in the history of the competition.
- Real Madrid: won three of its five penalty shootouts in European competitions.
- Real Madrid: they have eliminated the reigning UCL champion six times in KO ties, twice as many as any other team in the competition's history.
- Real Madrid: advanced in each of its last five KO ties in which they went to extra time (last such loss vs Bayern Munich in 2012).
- Rodrygo (MAD): reached 20 career UCL goals thanks to his strike in the 12th minute; he is the ninth different player to score 20+ goals in the competition and only the second Latino to do so (Di Stéfano - 49).
- Vinícius Jr. (MAD): played 102 minutes in the second leg; 2 goals and three assists in 7 career UCL games vs Manchester City.
- Four Latinos will be moving forward to the semifinals: Éder Militão, Vinícius Júnior, Rodrygo and Federico Valverde. Tied with PSG with the most Latino players in the squad by a team in the semifinals.
Bayern Munich 1-0 Arsenal (Bayern Munich advances 3-2 on agg.)
- Bayern: advanced to its 21st semifinal in the European Cup/UCL; only Real Madrid (33) has advanced to the semifinals more often in the history of the competition.
- Thomas Tuchel (BAY): first German coach to reach the UCL semifinals with three different clubs (PSG, Chelsea, Bayern Munich).
- Bayern: there are no players of Latin American descent in Bayern Munich's squad this year.
- Manuel Neuer (BAY): kept his 58th clean sheet in UCL play, a new record in the competition. Surpasses Iker Casillas' record of 57 clean sheets.
- Arsenal: eliminated by Bayern Munich for the fifth time in UCL play; only Real Madrid (6 vs Bayern) has eliminated a single opponent more often in the history of the competition.
- Arsenal: hasn't reached the UCL semifinals since 2008-09; won only one of its last nine UCL KO ties (Round of 16 vs Porto this season).
- Gabriel Magalhães, Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesús all played in the second leg in Germany; the Brazilians scored six of Arsenal's 19 UCL goals this season (Jesús - 4, Martinelli - 2).
