Giraffes twins
Giraffe twins were born at a Central Texas wildlife refuge May 10, making them the second pair to ever be born in the U.S. Creative Commons

A Central Texas wildlife bore witness to a once-in-a-lifetime birth.

The Associated Press reported that twin giraffes were born at the facility May 10.

The first born was a girl the refuge is calling Wasswa, who was followed by a younger brother, Nakato, shortly thereafter. This is only the second time such a birth has occurred in the U.S..

The long-necked siblings are the only living twin giraffe calves living in the U.S.. The first pair was born in 1988, but both twins have since died, Melissa Welch, spokeswoman for the ranch, said.

The birth is such a rare instance as twin giraffes are typically stillborn or have to be aborted, she told reporters.

Wasswa and Nakato are of a more common species known as reticulated giraffes. They will be staying at the private ranch and be available for public viewing.
