In a recent, American rapper Big Sean who dated Naya Rivera back in 2014 remembered the late actor and mourned her sudden demise. He also shared that while his 2014 profanity-laden song "I Don't F— With You" wasn’t based on her, he would have "never made" the song had he known that ex-fiancée would depart the world in such a tragic manner.
In his chat with Vulture, the 32-year-old rapper opened up about Rivera's death and when asked about the song that fans always associated with his and the “Glee” actress’ 2014 breakup and whether he regrets the track, he stressed that the song “wasn’t a diss to her.”
"That’s a tough question to answer because I’m still processing a lot of that," Sean said. "I don’t feel comfortable talking about it because I want to respect her. She’s made such an impact on people, and she’s done so many great things in her life and her career that it was hurtful to even have that [song] be associated with her.”
He shared that he had even played the song for Rivera at the time and "she knew about it, and she liked it." "We had a breakup that was very public, and we were young and we forgave each other and moved on from that. If I would have known something this tragic would have happened, I would have never made the song,” he added.
Sean and Rivera had gotten engaged in October 2013 but the engagement was called off by April 2014 and just three months later, Rivera married Ryan Dorsey, with whom she shared her 4-year-old son Josey, 4. In July 2020, Rivera accidentally drowned in Lake Piru in Ventura County and officers believe that while she rescued her son from the strong current by boosting him back on the boat, she couldn’t save herself.
After her body was discovered 5 days later, Sean had penned a moving tribute to her, sharing that he was "grieving and in shock."
"Rest In Peace Naya, God Bless your Soul! Thank you for blessing us all with your talent and presence," he wrote on Instagram.
"You are a hero! Not just because of how you saved your son, also because of the barriers you knocked down for so many people to make them feel confident in themselves and to stand tall and be proud when they couldn’t achieve that on their own," the rapper continued. "I appreciate and cherish everything that ever happened between us for making me wiser and a better person."
