Ramón Montalvo Hernández, a federal senator for the PRD, was shot five times in the State of Mexico early on Thursday morning. The senator is currently in a critical condition in a hospital in Mexico City. According to police, the senator was driving in his car in the neighborhood of La Concepción with his choffeur when another car stopped them. Assailants stepped out of the car and shot at the senator several times - reports indicate that at least five bullets made contact. Montalvo was rushed to hospital.

Local police worked with the Security Secretary to undertake an unsuccessful operation to find those responsible. The legislator and former mayor of Chalco was taken to a hospital in Polanco in the township of Ixtapaluca where he was stabilized, however, his injuries were such that he was moved to Dalinde Hospital in Mexico City where he remains in a serious condition. The chauffeur was apparently uninjured. The senator's family is at his bedside hoping for Montalvo to recover quickly.

Montalvo Hernández was president of the municipality of the Valle de Chalco from 2006-2009; he was Chief of the Department of Municipal Control from 2000 to 2003, and Director of Public Works from 2003 to 2005. He is currently a Senator under the Revolutionary Democracy Party (PRD) and works for the Secretary of Municipal Development, Urban Development and Territorial Order; Infrastructure; as well as the Work and Social Provisions Secretary. There is no information as yet on the motive for the attack.
