The Las Vegas Raiders have announced a quarterback change for the final two games of the season. Backup Jarrett Stidham will start in place of Derek Carr who will be inactive for the remainder of year. Third stringer Chase Garbers will be promoted to the number two.
“None of us is happy where we’re at,” head coach Josh McDaniels said Wednesday. “But we think it’s an opportunity to elevate a younger player who hasn’t had much time to play.”
The surprise move comes as the offseason draws closer with the possibility of a Carr trade looming overhead. The 31-year-old has been the subject of potential offseason trades for teams desperately looking for a serviceable passer. The nine year veteran has three years remaining on his current deal that includes a no-trade clause. Carr caries a $34.875 million cap hit for the 2023 season.
The Raiders were expected to be a dark horse candidate for the playoffs in 2022 after acquiring star wide receiver Davante Adams and hiring McDaniels. Those expectations seemed to be a bit overzealous as the Raiders have been a mediocre offensive team with Carr having one of the worst seasons of his career. Through 15 games Carr has tied his career-high in interceptions with 14 and has the lowest passer rating since his rookie year.
The Raiders are 6-9 as they get ready to face the San Francisco 49ers in Week 17.
