After tearing his ACL in a recent AS Monaco victory, Colombian striker Radamel Falcao's hopes of participating in the 2014 World Cup were significantly damaged. One of the top scorers in professional football, the former Atletico Madrid standout remains an important piece in the system of Ligue 1 affiliate AS Monaco but now that the international star is out with injury, his full-time club will need to be in top form if they're to catch table-leading Paris Saint-Germain, who currently pace the twenty-club league with 51 points.
Colombia's first World Cup contest falls on June 14 against Greece and after undergoing successful surgery to repair the damage, doctors are giving Falcao a 50-50 chance of taking the pitch at the summer tournament. “It went well,” Dr. Jose Carlos Noronha said shortly after performing the procedure. “The light at the end of the tunnel isn't small. There's a possibility of him going to the tournament and taking the field for the World Cup. Following the successful surgery, it's not out of the question.”
Watching his current club upend Marseille 2-0 from his hospital room, the 27-year-old striker remains in a positive state of mind, stating his support for Monaco on his personal Twitter page. “From Porto watch the team,” Falcao wrote. “Thank you for giving me strength, I'm here to give you mine!” Appearing in 17 league contests this season, the Santa Marta, Colombia native was having a strong campaign on the offensive end. Notching nine goals for the French side, Falcao certainly helped put Monaco in position for a league championship but without his services following the injury, the second-place club will be tasked with the challenge of making up three points in the standings, something that won't come easy with talented PSG leading the way.
