This week Hispanic viewers all across the U.S. were treated to a peculiar tv war involving the two most prominent Del Castillo family members, Kate del Castillo and Eric Del Castillo. Both star in two important projects for Univision and Telemundo that are programmed against each other. Father and daughter have been duking it out in a ratings battle like we've never seen before. "Dueños Del Paraíso" starring Kate, had an advantage over the Univision offering as it premiered a week before, so viewers were already hooked with the new narco-novela. However, being that "Que Te Perdone Dios" is a Televisa production airing on the No. 1 Hispanic network, Don Eric Del Castillo, was the clear winner from the get-go. His telenovela smashed the competition and became the top show on Monday night during its premiere episode, but the war is not over yet.
Univision has struggled with the 10pm hour of their primetime block. It was Kate's previous "La Reina Del Sur" hit that made the network juggle their programming. Remember that hour was once occupied by "Cristina" and "Don Francisco Presenta?" Those shows were vanished from the network in favor of another soap to even out the playing field. Ever since then Univision has scheduled telenovelas during that hour and they really lost ground when "La Malquerida" aired opposite "Señora Acero." Victoria Ruffo's drama was no match for the Telemundo one starring Blanca Soto. Both fought head to head with Telemundo often beating Univision in the coveted 18-49 demo rating. Rumor has it that Univision was scrambling to get out of the gutter and asked Televisa to produce an original telenovela for them as Kate was coming back to Telemundo and they didn't want to suffer another headache.
"Que Te Perdone Dios" happened and Televisa managed to bring together a group that was sure to give a fierce war. They called Angelli Nesma, who was the producer of hit telenovelas like "Lo Que La Vida Me Robó," "Abismo De Pasión" and "María La Del Barrio." The story that would be produced was based on "Abrázame Muy Fuerte," which was a massive hit for the network in the past starring Fernando Colunga, Aracely Arámbula and Victoria Ruffo. Not only that, but they also called Mr. Eric Del Castillo to play a role during the launch of this new soap. We can't help but speculate if this was all planned out so we could talk about the Del Castillo war. Yes, we fell for it and we love it. Either way, Del Castillo's character will die on "Que Te Perdone Dios" and Kate will remain until the last episode of her "Dueños Del Paraíso." We should also note that over on Azteca América, Verónica Del Castillo anchors the the tabloid-style news show "Al Extremo" during the same hour. She recently posted a photo with proof that the Del Castillo family are taking over television, which you can check out below.
