As Iran continues its nuclear enrichment program despite sanctions from the United States, platforms with ties to the government threatened a nuclear bombing on New York on Saturday as the country expressed support for Russian President Vladimir Putin.
A two-minute video was posted on a Telegram channel with ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on Saturday, with the footage warning that a nuclear attack against the United States would be imminent if the country “make[s] any stupid mistakes,” according to the New York Post.
The video then spoke about the nuclear enrichment facilities of Iran, saying that the “peaceful” nuclear program of the country can easily be weaponized if they feel any sort of threat against the country, before claiming that Iran had the missiles necessary to turn “New York into hellish ruins.”
Although Iran has not been on track to creating nuclear weapons, they have been proceeding with their nuclear enrichment program since 2018, when then-U.S. President Donald Trump pulled out of the 2015 nuclear agreement between the two countries and imposed sanctions on Iran for “maximum pressure,” earning the ire of the international community for its actions, CBS News reported.
Since then, Iran has been able to enrich over 60% of the uranium needed to build a nuclear bomb, with the fear becoming that the country reaches the 90% threshold needed to make an actual nuclear bomb a viable reality.
Iran has also expressed solidarity with Russia, who faces similarly-strong sanctions from the West over its invasion of Ukraine, giving support towards Putin’s decision as a necessary “initiative” towards neutralizing the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s power.
“War is a violent and difficult issue, and the Islamic Republic is in no way happy that civilians get caught up in it, but concerning Ukraine, had you not taken the initiative, the other side would have taken the initiative and caused the war,” Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said.
“NATO is a dangerous entity. The West is totally opposed to a strong, independent Russia. If the way is opened for NATO, it will recognize no limits. If it hadn't been stopped in Ukraine, it would have later started a similar war in Crimea.”
