Kia the puppy was locked in a car stored at an impound lot for a month. The 12-week-old terrier schnauzer mix managed to survive without water, eating garbage left over from McDonald's.
An animal shelter in Kansas City was caring for the puppy found locked in a car, Yahoo News reports. The shelter named the puppy Kia and the little survivor is said to make a full recovery.
The car the puppy was locked in was taken to an impound lot at the beginning of April. Nobody noticed the puppy inside the car.
On Monday an attendant at the impound lot noticed the puppy locked in the car. The attendant called the police and they were able to get the puppy out of the car. Kansascity.com says that city officials are investigating the circumstances surrounding the puppy getting locked in that car.
Danny Rotert is a spokesman for the Kansas City Municipal Government, he called the puppy's ordeal a "pretty miraculous story."
Kansascity.com spoke with veterinarian Billie Deam who said the key to the puppy surviving a month in a car lies in what was in the food she ate.
"Physiologically it's possible, depending on what she was eating to survive on. But it's really stretching the outer limits of what's possible."
When the puppy arrived at the animal shelter the workers who treated her noticed how small she was and believed that the dog was only 8-weeks-old not 12.
Kia is now residing at a foster home. It will be some time before the puppy can be adopted.
