René Pérez, front man of Calle 13, will be sitting on a throne in the Puerto Rican Day Parade on June 8 in New York. He will be the king of the parade. Rosie Pérez will be the queen. Pérez is known for his social commentary and actions, sometimes leading him to meet with Latin American presidents.
He supports the Puerto Rican Independence movement. Pérez is also known for being an outspoken critic of the United States. His latest collaboration was with Julian Assange on the title track of his album “Multi-Viral.”
This parade will honor Cheo Feliciano and Gran Combo of Puerto Rico’s founder Eddie Perez, two greats of Latin music which both have died in the past year. He will be following in the footsteps of fellow stars like Marc Anthony who has also been a king of the annual parade.
Lauren Vélez will be the godmother, Polito Vega the godfather and Frankie Negrón will be the ambassador. If you are Puerto Rican, or have family that is Puerto Rican, or even feel prideful, do not miss this fun patriotic event on June 8.
