Sony has announced that the PlayStation will launch with limited voice command functionality. However, gamers should expect more to be added over time. Sony reps confirmed to Engadget that anyone trying to use the PlayStation 4's Camera features won't be able to turn on the console with voice alone at launch. It was also announced that gamers won't be able to orally control any of the third-party apps that have been announced. The sony rep told Engadget that more interface functionality will be added to the PS Camera and microphone in "due time" and that they "hope" to integrate apps functionality soon too.
Now you may feel a little ripped off, especially if you were under the impression you could control most functionality with only your voice. But no need to worry there are still some functions that will be utilized orally. According to Engadget the console can be turned off with voice commands, and games can be opened. Facial recognition is also limited at this stage, only being used for logging in, and there's zero gesture integration present. Sony explained that more functionality will be added over time, though stopped short of saying precisely when we could expect updates.
Meanwhile the competition, Microsoft's Xbox One, is pushing strongly with its in-the-box voice integration, which the company showcased in a 12-minute real-time demo that showed off a number of functions called out orally. But Engadget makes a good point, although this feature won't be utilized at launch it also isn't Sony's selling point for the PS4 whereas it is for Microsoft and the Xbox One. The PlayStation 4 will be available in North America on November 15 and in Europe on November 29. Even without the voice functionality features will you still be buying a PS4?
