Sony has acknowledged malfunctions found by users on many of the more than 1 million PS4 consoles sold since they became available at Friday at midnight. The PlayStation maker says it's addressing what some have come to call the "blue light of death," which has frustrated some buyers when they try to power on their console. "Just brought home my brand new PS4 and when [I] turn it on all it does is blink blue ...," one user wrote on Sony's PlayStation support site, according to CNN. "I am overly upset that I spent most of my day waiting in line in the cold. Not a happy customer to say the least."

Sony had earlier acknowledged that "a handful of people have reported issues" with the new console in an earlier statement, saying that the number was less than 0.4 percent of the total units shipped. "This is within our expectations for a new product introduction, and the vast majority of PS4 feedback has been overwhelmingly positive," the statement had said. "We are closely monitoring for additional reports, but we think these are isolated incidents and are on track for a great launch."

In a more recent statement, they amended that estimate to reflect the unexpectedly large number of consoles which were affected. "The number of affected PS4 systems is less than 1 percent, which represents a very small percentage of total units shipped to date and is within the expected range for a new product introduction," the company wrote, according to ABC News. It also said it was working to accommodate the needs of customers who have found the so-called "blue light of death." "We understand the frustration of consumers that have had a problem and are working with them and our retail partners to help troubleshoot issues and ensure affected units are exchanged."

The company has also released an extensive troubleshooting guide for those affected. It says the complaints are likely related to problems with the consoles' power supplies, hard drives, related hardware or connections to an incompatible television. Possible fixes run an update of TV software to the more intuitive -- turning the console on and off again.
