For anyone who has been predicting the British Royal family to fall apart now that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex aren’t there to lend their advice in the royal affairs, they can put their speculations to rest. Last night the House of Windsor was abuzz with chatter as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge hosted their first state occasion on behalf of the Queen, accompanied by Princess Royal and the Earl and Countess of Wessex.
And with the smoothness and finesse with which they pulled off the event offers a glimpse of a future where they will assume their rightful position as King and Queen of Britain, still effortlessly handling all the responsibilities the monarch comes with.
The occasion proved to be a litmus test for Prince William and Kate Middleton
Even without the presence of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the royal couple hosted the reception for the UK-Africa Summit with the same elegance one would expect from the future King and Queen of Britain.
While state occasions are held by the Palace in January as the Queen returns to London sometime in February. But with the looming presence of a post-Brexit Britain inching nearer, the summit held immense potential it leads to a dynamic new trading network across much of Africa and as President Buhari of Nigeria noted, it could generate a “jolt of vitality” for the entire Commonwealth.
And Prince William and Kate Middleton rose to the occasion in the Queen and Prince of Wales’ (who is about to embark on a historic tour of Israel) absence. And aided by the indefatigable Princess Royal and the Earl and Countess of Wessex the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge welcomed all the heads of state personally.
From taking a “team photo” in the Throne Room to circulating through the White, Blue and Green Drawing Rooms and the Picture Gallery, to interact with the 200 guests, the Windsors were a flying success. While in another part of the country, Prince Harry was hosting a summit conference, perhaps one of his last duties as a royal.
