Protesters displayed an upside-down American flag at California's Yosemite National Park in response to the firing of roughly 1,000 National Park Service employees by the Trump administration.
The demonstration comes amid widespread job cuts within the National Park Service (NPS), with at least a dozen Yosemite staffers among those affected, NBC Bay Area reported.
While the government has pledged to reinstate some jobs and hire more seasonal workers, the cuts have left many employees struggling with sudden job loss and, in some cases, the loss of employer-provided housing.
On Saturday, a group of climbers rappelled down El Capitan's 3,000-foot granite face and unfurled a 30-by-50-foot upside-down American flag, a traditional symbol of distress. The act was meant to highlight concerns over what protesters called the government's attack on public lands.
The display coincided with Yosemite's famous "Firefall" event, ensuring maximum visibility for the demonstration.
The flag remained in place for several hours before being removed by the climbers.
