Prominent attorney Marc Elias has accused Elon Musk of aiding in the "dismantling" of American democracy, vowing to continue fighting for voting rights and free elections after being targeted on X.

Elias, a well-known election lawyer and advocate for voting rights, has long been vocal about the threats he believes President Donald Trump and his allies pose to democracy. Once an active user of X, he distanced himself from the platform after Musk's takeover, citing the rise of hate speech and misinformation.

Recently, Musk publicly criticized Elias and another attorney, prompting Elias to respond with a scathing open letter detailing his family's history of persecution, his dedication to democracy, and his defiance against authoritarianism.

"I used to be a regular on Twitter, where I amassed over 900,000 followers — all organic except for the right-wing bots who seemed to grow in number. Like many others, I stopped regularly posting on the site because, under your stewardship, it became a hellscape of hate and misinformation," Elias wrote.

In his letter, Elias addressed Musk directly, criticizing his leadership of X, his apparent alignment with Trump, and his platform's tolerance of antisemitism.

"You are very rich and very powerful. You have thrown in with Donald Trump. Whether it is because you think you can control him or because you share his authoritarian vision, I do not know. I do not care," Elias wrote.

Elias recounted his Jewish family's history of fleeing persecution in Russia and drew parallels to modern political threats.

"As an immigrant yourself, you can no doubt sympathize with what it means to leave behind your country, extended family, friends and neighbors to come to the United States. Of course, you probably had more than 86 rubles in your pocket. You probably didn't ride for nine days in the bottom of a ship or have your surname changed by immigration officials," Elias wrote.

He accused Musk of contributing to the erosion of democratic institutions and vowed to continue litigating to defend voting rights.

The letter, which quickly gained traction online, underscored Elias' stance against what he perceives as growing authoritarianism in the United States.
