Princess Eugenie is now incorporating her husband’s name into her own, but not in the way most people probably expect. Her name change was revealed on Wednesday, eight months since she and husband Jack Brooksbank tied the knot in October.
Queen Elizabeth’s granddaughter is honoring Jack by choosing to use his last name as part of her official married name. Instead of becoming Eugenie Brooksbank, however, she is now Princess Eugenie, Mrs. Jack Brooksbank.
Her new name was announced along with the other members of the royal family at the Buckingham Palace garden party on Wednesday, where her older sister was called Princess Beatrice of York, in honor of their parents, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, who are the Duke and Duchess of York.
Since she got married, Princess Eugenie has never had a name change. Last April, the Court Circular for the Maundy Service at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle simply referred to her as Princess Eugenie. Last March, she was called Princess Eugenie of York during a visit to the Royal National Orthopedic Hospital.
Although her official married name was not announced until Wednesday this week, Princess Eugenie seemed to have unofficially embraced her new last name soon after their wedding. Soon after the royal wedding, she attended a festival-style party and rocked a jacket with the label “Mrs. Brooksbank,” designed by Sam Dougal.
Dougal shared a photo of Princess Eugenie’s jacket shortly after the event, saying he’s honored to have been asked to design the jacket for HRH Princess Eugenie. “I’m so so honored to have been asked to design the bespoke look she wore for the day 2 wedding celebrations at Windsor in collaboration with her brilliant stylist @styletonic_sarahprice,” Dougal wrote in the caption. “The pale pink biker jacket was embroidered with the words ‘Mrs. Brooksbank’ in the Princess’ own handwriting.”
Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank got married in a lavish ceremony at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle on Oct. 12. They had been dating for seven years when Jack popped the question to Princess Eugenie in front of a volcano in Nicaragua in January this year.
