Princess Diana gave a controversial interview to Martin Bashir for Panorama in 1995. During that time, she had already been separated from Prince Charles for three years.
While giving the interview, the Princess of Wales thought that she was doing the right thing by sharing her side of the story. But she didn’t realize that the interview would cause her even bigger problems.
During an interview with the International Business Tribune, royal author Penny Junor said that the Princess of Wales was very pleased with her interview that she even asked her friends to watch it. While her goal was to come clean with her truth, critics saw the interview as the Princess of Wales’ way of airing her dirty laundry and destroying the reputation of the royal family.
“She was very pleased with what she’d done at the time, she thought it was a great performance and she was thrilled,” Junor said. But after Queen Elizabeth watched the interview, she wrote a letter to Prince Charles and Princess Diana urging them to finalize their divorce.
During the interview, Princess Diana confirmed Prince Charles’ affair with Camilla Parker Bowles by saying that her marriage became a little too crowded because there were three of them. But the heir to the throne already hinted at his infidelity during his interview a year earlier.
The mom of two also said that Prince Charles isn’t fit to be king. But she said that this is because the dad of two made it clear that he didn’t want the role. In Princess Diana’s mind, sharing her story would mean that she would be able to court the media and gain more following, but this isn’t what happened.
One year after her conversation with Bashir, the Prince and Princess of Wales’ divorce was finalized. And less than a year later, Princess Diana passed away in a fatal car crash in Paris.
The royal family had nothing to do with the accident, but Prince Charles and Camilla were blamed for it. But Princess Diana had already moved on from Prince Charles at that time because he was already dating Dodi Al-Fayed.
