Prince William wasn’t supposed to inherit the title of Duke of Cambridge when he tied the knot with Kate Middleton. After all, a much older royal was offered the title but he refused to accept it.

According to Express, Prince Edward was offered the Duke of Cambridge title when he married Sophie, Countess of Wessex. But he was set on having an entirely different name. At present, the dad of two is known as the Earl of Wessex.

Prince Edward reportedly wanted to be named after a character from his favorite film, “Shakespeare In Love.” The character of Lord Wessex was played by Colin Firth.

In 2006, a source told the Telegraph that Prince Edward personally asked Queen Elizabeth II to give him the royal title, and Her Majesty agreed. As such, Sophie is not known as a Duchess unlike Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle. Sophie’s official royal title is Sophie, Countess of Wessex.

Meanwhile, Prince Edward was not given a Dukedom after his royal wedding because there is no such thing as the Duke of Wessex. In fact, there isn’t a region in the United Kingdom with the name Wessex.

Wessex was one of the kingdoms of Anglo-Saxon England before the country unified in the 10th century.

In related news, Prince Edward and Sophie also made headlines this week after their love story was revisited. According to royal expert Ingrid Seward, Prince Edward and Sophie’s relationship wasn’t love at first sight. In fact, they didn’t seem attracted to each other when they first met in 1987.

It was only after their second meeting six years later that the two hit it off. And Prince Edward and Sophie waited another six years before they tied the knot. At present, Prince Edward is the only child of the Queen and Prince Philip who still hasn’t gotten a divorce. His older siblings have all been divorced at least once.
