There’s another royal wedding happening this weekend, and Prince William will not be in attendance. On Saturday, May 18, Lady Gabriella Windsor will walk down the aisle in St. George’s Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle to marry her long-time love, Thomas Kingston.

Lady Gabriella, who turned 38 on April 23 this year, is Queen Elizabeth’s first cousin once removed. The daughter of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, Lady Gabriella — or "Ella" to her close friends and family — is therefore a fairly close relative of Prince William and Prince Harry.

So why will the Duke of Cambridge skip the royal wedding? There’s no squabble or tiff among the royal family. Instead, Prince William has a very important affair to attend to.

Kensington Palace, according to People, has revealed that Prince William will not be in attendance to the royal wedding as he will be at the Football Association (FA) Cup Final in Wembley. Coincidentally, Ella’s wedding will take place at 12 noon, the same time as the match between Manchester and Watford, and Prince William has to be there for the awarding ceremony.

“The Duke of Cambridge, President of the FA, will attend the 2019 FA Cup Final between Manchester City and Watford at Wembley Stadium, and will present the trophy to the winners,” a statement from the Palace said.

It has been confirmed, however, that the Queen will be in attendance, as well as “other members of the Royal Family.” Although the “other members” have not been named yet, it is expected that Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank will be present on the big day.

Meanwhile, it is speculated that although Prince William will miss Lady Gabriella’s big day, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, is likely to be present. Who will be her date if her husband is absent? Most probably, her sister, Pippa Middleton, who invited Lady Gabriella and Thomas to her own wedding in 2017.

Prince William became President of England’s Football Association in May 2006. Formed in 1863, the FA is the oldest football association in history.
