Prince William learned about his future role as king at such a young age. As such, he also felt the burden of his kingship very early on.

But despite the struggles that he faced, Prince William received Princess Diana’s vote of confidence. While she was still alive, the Princess of Wales said that her eldest son has the makings of a great king.

In the documentary “Prince William At Thirty,” royal correspondent Jennie Bond shared details from her conversation with the late royal. “Diana told me that from a young age, he felt the burden of kingship on his shoulders and he found that to be a very heavy burden to bear,” Bond said. “But she thought he had the makings of a great King,” she added.

Princess Diana also felt that the United Kingdom would be lucky to have her son as their king. However, she didn’t have the same thoughts about Prince Charles’ future role.

During her interview with Martin Bashir for Panorama, Princess Diana was asked if she thinks that Prince Charles would ever be king. At first, Princess Diana said that she doesn’t know the answer to the question because no one knows what the future holds. At this point, Bashir asked Princess Diana if she thinks Prince Charles wants to be king.

“There was always conflict on that subject and we discussed it, and I understood that conflict because it's a very demanding role, being Prince of Wales, but it's an equally more demanding role to be King,” Princess Diana said.

“And being Prince of Wales produces more freedom now and being King would be a little bit more suffocating. And because I know the character, I would think that the top job, as I call it, would bring enormous limitations to him, and I don't know whether he could adapt to that,” she added.

But if Princess Diana didn’t think that Prince Charles could adapt to his role as king, she had a very different mindset when it came to her sons. In “Harry: Conversations With The Prince,” royal author Angela Levin said that Princess Diana even gave Prince Harry the nickname “Good King Harry” because she thought that he would make a perfect king.
