While people might never forget how Prince Charles cheated on Princess Diana with Camilla Parker Bowles, the Princess of Wales also had her share of lovers when it became apparent that things between her and her husband were beyond repair. What is even more surprising is the fact that one of her lovers was once very close to Prince William and Prince Harry.
In fact, it can be argued that William and Harry brought them together. Strangely it was because of Diana’s desire to get closer to Prince Charles and their sons that she met her lover.
Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince Harry love polo and horse in general, so Diana wants to give horseback riding a try. “[Diana] had never been a horsewoman but, after seeing how much pleasure it brought her sons, decided to have a go,” Katie Nicholl wrote in her book “William And Harry,” which was published in 2010.
Princess Diana decided to hire an instructor to get her started, and it was the young Army captain James Hewitt. “The handsome Hewitt became her instructor and soon became a regular visitor to Highgrove, where he would help William and Harry improve their trotting and cantering,” the writer continued.
By 1986, however, Prince Charles started seeing his old flame, Camilla Parker Bowles, once more. It was also around this time that Princess Diana’s relationship with Hewitt turned romantic.
Prince Charles reportedly knew of Princess Diana and Hewitt’s affair but made no moves to stop the latter’s visits. “Diana told her lover that her husband knew about the extent of their relationship,” author Tina Brown wrote in her 2007 “The Diana Chronicles.”
What’s even more surprising is that Prince William and Prince Harry became quite close to Hewitt. “He became such a familiar private guest whenever the prince was away that William and Harry developed a fondness for him,” Brown wrote.
The captain would play with them and even bring them gifts, to William and Harry’s delight. “Hewitt had little Army uniforms made for them for their visits to Windsor Barracks, “Brown added. “They loved playing on the Highgrove lawn with the Army captain and his black Labrador.”
Prince Harry, in particular, soon warmed up to Princess Diana’s lover. “Harry initially called him ‘mummy’s friend’ and subsequently the more intimate ‘Uncle’ James, a sobriquet Diana encouraged both boys to use for her subsequent lovers,” journalist Angela Levin said in “Harry Conversations With The Prince.”
In fact, Hewitt might have influenced Prince Harry to pursue a military career, which lasted 10 years and even included a deployment to the war-torn Afghanistan. “Harry was in his element and announced excitedly: ‘I’m going to be a soldier when I grow up’,” Levin narrated.
