Romeo Santos and Prince Royce are considered the "King of Bachata" and the "Prince of Bachata" respectively, bringing this genre to a new, more sophisticated level without losing its original feel.
Bachata became popular in the countryside and the rural neighborhoods of the Dominican Republic, where it originated in the early 20th century. Its subjects are often romantic, especially telling tales of heartbreak and sadness. In fact, the original term used to name the genre was "amargue" (bitterness, or bitter music), until the term bachata caught on.
