Prince Charles was forced to make a catastrophic decision after his dad, Prince Philip, issued an ultimatum urging him to marry Princess Diana. In the book “The Duchess: The Untold Story” by royal author Penny Junor, it was revealed that the Duke of Edinburgh wrote a letter to his son forcing him to make up his mind about the Princess of Wales.

For Prince Philip, there were only two options: either marry Princess Diana or let her go for good. The 97-year-old retired royal was also worried about Princess Diana due to the media madness surrounding her, that’s why he knew that Prince Charles shouldn’t keep her hanging on.

“The Prince saw it as an ultimatum to marry, although others who saw the note think this was the wrong interpretation,” she said. “The note was, however, ambiguous and the two did not sit down and talk about it,” Junor added.

After reading Prince Philip’s letter, Prince Charles became increasingly confused and anxious. At that time, he was still unsure about marrying Princess Diana, but he pushed through with it because the mom of two was perfect in so many ways.

Princess Diana, on the other hand, was head over heels in love with Prince Charles even though they’ve only known each other for a short time. The couple tied the knot on July 29, 1981.

Prince Charles and Prince Philip have always had a complicated relationship, and they were never close. According to Junor, the future king also has a distant relationship with Queen Elizabeth II.

While he was growing up, Prince Charles experienced an absolute hell of bullying while he was studying at Gordonstoun. Despite his difficult experiences in the institution, Prince Philip decided to not transfer Prince Charles to another boarding school.

On the contrary, Prince Philip has a much warmer relationship with his only daughter, Princess Anne. After all, Princess Anne is more like Prince Philip.

“Philip’s childhood had been difficult and punctuated by loss, and he had no patience with his son who had grown up with the security and comfort that he himself had never known,” Junor wrote.
