Prince Charles gave up on Princess Diana and their marriage in the end, but not because he didn’t care about her. Rather, the future king realized that there was nothing he could do to repair their relationship.
In the book “The Firm,” royal biographer Penny Junor said that it took the dad of two quite some time before he finally called it quits with Princess Diana. In the beginning, he still dealt with the late royal’s unpredictable behavior and tantrums.
For instance, Prince Charles tried finding a psychiatrist that could help with Princess Diana’s mood swings. He also cut ties with some of his friends that Princess Diana didn’t trust. Prince Harry’s dad also gave away his adorable dog because the Princess of Wales thought Harvey was smelly.
But because of all the issues that Princess Diana faced, Prince Charles also changed his attitude toward his ex-wife. Prince William’s dad became hardened and callous toward Princess Diana.
According to Junor, all of Prince Charles’ efforts to save his marriage didn’t make any difference. He also realized that he doesn’t know how to calm the late royal down, so he decided to give up.
“When she made dramatic gestures he walked away, when she self-harmed he walked away,” Junor said. “Not because he didn’t care but because he couldn’t help. He felt desperate, hopeless and guilty, and to this day he feels a terrible sense of failure for not having been able to make his marriage work,” she added.
In 1992, Prince Charles and Princess Diana traveled to Korea for their royal engagement. While there, the couple’s marriage ended for good.
“It had taken one final disastrous tour to Korea, and a botched weekend Charles had planned to have with the children at Sandringham, for the prince finally to snap and agree there was no purpose in carrying on,” Junor said. “The marriage was over and all hope that he and Diana might still be friends was also over.”
On Dec. 9, 1992, former Prime Minister John Major announced the separation of the Prince and Princess of Wales. The announcement shocked the public, and it also left Prince Charles feeling utterly miserable.
