President Trump on Monday slammed the U.S. military’s top brass in an unprecedented public attack of sorts, during a news conference on Monday. Trump’s inflammatory comments shed light on his strained ties with the Pentagon. The president further alleged that the military was reportedly “waging wars to boost the profits of defense manufacturing companies.”

“I'm not saying the military's in love with me – the soldiers are, the top people in the Pentagon probably aren't because they want to do nothing but fight wars so that all of those wonderful companies that make the bombs and make the planes and make everything else stay happy," said Trump during a White House news conference.

The comments came shortly after Trump was embroiled in a fresh new controversy, courtesy “The Atlantic”, which revealed that Trump had made derogatory remarks in the past, about American soldiers who died in battle. Trump has a long-standing history of undermining the services of several veterans such as the late Sen. John McCain and his former Secretary of Defense, retired Gen. Jim Mattis, and the like.

Trump allegedly credited his administration for boosting the defense budget. He suggested that the extended budget was a testament to his support for the military.

While the Pentagon didn’t respond to the request for comment on Trump’s comments; Scores of critics felt Trump was a "deeply ignorant and insulting view of American military leadership."

"The President's comments about the motivations of military leaders not only demeans their service and that of those they lead; he lends credence to the very disdain and thoughtlessness he tries to deny,” said John Kirby, the retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral and CNN analyst.

Thinking along similar lines, CNN national security reporter Ryan Brown tweeted, "Some folks really ought to read what President Eisenhower actually said. While they are both critical of the military-industrial complex, nowhere does Eisenhower actually accuse military leaders of engaging in shooting wars to boost profits for firms.”
