A Sydney man was taken into custody on Monday as part of police efforts to crack down on child sexual abuse and exploitation facilitated through the internet in Sydney, Australia.
The suspect, 48, whose identity has been concealed, is charged with online grooming and soliciting child abuse material following a month-long probe by the Strike Force Trawler.
According to the New South Wales (NSW) Police Force, the man was snared after believing he was speaking to the mother, 39, of a nine-year-old girl, blatantly convincing her to allow him to perform sexual acts on her child, 7NEWS reported.
However, the woman was an undercover cop part of a team of specially trained detectives who investigate matters against adult predators and abusers, such as sexual assault, serious physical abuse, and extreme cases of neglect.
Last month, law enforcement started engaging online with the man from Sydney’s inner west.
"Police will allege in court that the man believed he was speaking with the 39-year-old mother of a nine-year-old girl and engaged in sexually explicit conversations about acts he wished to perform on the child," police said in a statement.
Following an extensive investigation, detectives arrested the 48-year-old man at Westmead on Monday at about 12:20 p.m.
A search warrant was subsequently executed at his Breakfast Point address where investigators confiscated several electronic devices, which will undergo a further examination as detectives work on the case, the Daily Mail reported.
The alleged sex predator was brought to Granville Police Station and charged with using carriage service to procure a child under 16 years for sexual activity, according to police.
He was denied bail and is set to front Fairfield Local Court on Tuesday.
Taskforce Strike Force Trawler investigates sexual abuse and exploitation of children incidents facilitated through the internet and related telecommunications devices.
It has been set up by the Child Abuse and Sex Crime Squad's Child Exploitation Internet Unit, which works closely with NSW Police Force and their law-enforcement counterparts interstate and overseas.
