Pope Francis (né Jorge Mario Bergoglio) had a minor slip of tongue in his Sunday sermon last week, in which the Argentinian accidentally said "f***" in Italian instead of "example." In his defense, the words are very similar in pronounciation--example is "caso" in Italian and f*** is "cazzo"--so it's not hard to see how the Pope could make the mistake during his weekly blessing from the Vatican.

Despite correcting himself immediately, the video footage of the Pope dropping the F-bomb has made its way on YouTube and Italian media websites. In the sermon, which has since gone viral, the 77-year-old Pope was speaking about the crisis in Ukraine from the window of his apartment at the Vatican's Apostolic Palace.

"It is my wish that all the components of the country will endeavor to overcome misunderstandings and build together the future of the nation," said the Pope during his sermon. "I make a heartfelt appeal to the international community to support every initiative on behalf of dialogue and harmony. A heart full of longing for possession is a heart empty of God. For this, Jesus many times chastised the rich because the risk for them to seek security in the wealth of this world is high. In this f***, in this case the providence of God is made visible as gesture of solidarity."

Many have spoken up defending the Pope, pointing out that the mistake he made is common amongst native Spanish speakers. What's more, the Pope's accidental mishap has only solidified his status as the "people's Pope." As the first Jesuit and Latin American Bishop of Rome, Pope Francis has come out to speak up about same sex rights, the role of women in the church and has been more progressive and open minded than his predecessors.

"The Lord created us in His image and likeness, and we are the image of the Lord," said the Pope about non-believers going to heaven, "and He does good and all of us have this commandment at heart, do good and do not do evil. All of us. 'But, Father, this is not Catholic! He cannot do good.' Yes, he can... The Lord has redeemed all of us, all of us, with the Blood of Christ, all of us, not just Catholics. Everyone! 'Father, the atheists?' Even the atheists. Everyone!"
