Police Prevents Suicide By Stopping Woman From Jumping Off Of Bridge

A video of a woman being dragged away by police went viral on social media. To shed light on the incident Srinagar Police shared details of the incident. It was revealed that police and security forces worked together to prevent the woman from jumping into the river Jhelum from the bridge. Surveillance footage from the bridge also captured the woman’s attempt at taking her own life.

The woman in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India was seen walking onto the Budshah Bridge in the heart of the city. She goes close to a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officer who is standing guard at the bridge. She is seen peeking over the rails of the bridge into the water below. This draws the attention of the guard.

Within moments the woman is seen trying to jump from the bridge. She had one leg over the rail when the officer grabbed her preventing her jump. Jammu and Kashmir police officers soon join the CRPF officer in an effort to stop the woman.

In a video shot by a bystander, the woman is seen fighting to free herself from the police. The video was shared by Srinagar Police on Monday, May 31, India.com reported. It took at least three police officers to subdue the woman. She continued to try and escape from the police. Three officers were seen picking the woman up and removing her from the bridge.

A person in the video can be heard asking for a female officer to be present. Srinagar Police pointed out that given the situation it was not possible for the officers to wait for a woman officer to arrive. The officers acted to deescalate the situation.

The woman, whose identity has not been revealed, was placed in a police van and removed from the scene. She was later pacified and is receiving counseling, police sources confirmed. Police continue to investigate why the woman tried to take the drastic step of trying to end her life.

Kashmir Observer reported that while police prevented the woman’s suicide, another man in the city committed suicide by jumping into Jhelum. The unidentified man was seen riding his bicycle onto the Cement Bridge in the Qamarwari area of the city. He dismounted from the cycle and jumped into the river below. Locals tried to search for the man as soon as he jumped. Police are trying to identify the man from the bicycle left behind as his body has not been found.
