A new trailer for “Pokemon: Detective Pikachu” has arrived, hinting the arrival of a new villain. The trailer also reveals that the upcoming film will feature an all-new Pikachu, albeit demonstrating many of the characters’ familiar attacks.
Part of the new trailer shows Jack and Pikachu engaging in a massive battle against the psychic Mewtwo. Although the film’s producers have yet to confirm the villain in the upcoming film, the new clip teases that it could be Mewtwo, the genetic Pokemon created by a scientist after a horrific gene splicing.
Speculations are rife that since fighting someone as strong and as powerful as Mewtwo will be difficult for the titular character, he needs to use an attack that can equal the villain’s psychic power. True enough, one moment in the trailer shows Pikachu sprinting until he picks up enough speed to soar, generating an immense wave of sparks before ultimately tackling the enemy.
Avid “Pokemon” fans were quick to recognize this special attack as the Volt Tackle, a move that was introduced in the later generations of the game. In early “Pokemon” games, Pikachu got to gain this power by jumping through hoops or through events.
In the trailer, Pikachu seems to use the same power in the same way he used it in the anime series — running toward an opponent while gathering a sufficient amount of electricity to attack. It remains to be seen how this special power will play out in his battle against Mewtwo, but the trailer hints at an intense fight that will leave fans on the edge of their seats.
“Pokemon: Detective Pikachu” will follow Tim as he joins forces with the wise-cracking Detective Pikachu to track his father down. As they look for clues through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City, they come across a host of Pokemon characters and uncover a shocking truth that could potentially destroy the peaceful co-existence of humans and Pokemons.
Starring Ryan Reynolds as the titular character and Justice Smith as Tim, the film will showcase a broad range of Pokemon characters, each demonstrating their own unique abilities.
“Pokemon: Detective Pikachu” will arrive in theaters on May 10.
