In an announcement in New York on Wednesday, Sony debuted their latest console -- the Playstation 4.
Or at least revealed everything but the Playstation 4. Sony brought out developers from game companies such as Square Enix, Capcom and Blizzard to talk about their latest efforts for the next gen console. While Sony showed off various next gen trailers and the console's controller, the console itself was not show to the crowd.
Luckily the important part isn't the hardware, but what gamers and developers can do with the hardware -- and according to the press conference that will be a lot. Engadget notes the specs as "8-core 64-bit x86 "Jaguar" CPU built by AMD, a Radeon GPU comprised of 18 "compute units," which push out 1.84 TFLOPS, and 8GB of GDDR5 RAM." While the former Playstation's launch price was $499 (or a higher end model at $599) Sony wants to launch the system at a lower cost.
Some new games were mentioned at the conference along with some titles we've already heard of. Games like Bungie's Destiny or Ubisoft's Watch Dogs made the biggest splash. Destiny comes from the same studio who created the Halo series. The game will also be a first person shooter and is on track to be released for the Playstation 3 as well as 4. Ubisoft's game Watch Dogs has players follow a hacker in a game focused on cyber warfare.
The system's controller was also revealed at the conference. The DualShock 4 differs from the third iteration in the touch area and the share button. Gamers are able to share gameplay videos using the button found on the top left.
According to Sony, the controller also has enhanced rumble compared to the previous DualShock.
There was no release date given for the Playstation 4, though some believe the system will make its way to market by the end of this year.
