Two individuals were arrested after a plane illegally transporting a sizable quantity of drugs made an emergency landing on a Southern California highway in the middle of the night.
After reporting engine trouble, the pilot was forced to park the Piper PA-28 – a small, four-seater plane – along Highway 76 in the seaside town of Oceanside at around 1:45 a.m., according to a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) report.
When officers arrived at the scene, they began conducting a standard search of the aircraft.
It didn't take long before they found "large amounts of narcotics" inside the vessel, according to Fox 5 San Diego.
The pilot and the passenger, both of whom live in the Oceanside area, were arrested and taken into custody for suspected illicit drug trafficking, according to police. The plane is registered to a San Diego company.
The FAA is currently investigating the incident.
