Pizza Hut manager Tony Rohr was forced to write a letter of resignation after he refused to open his Elkhart, Indiana store on Thanksgiving Day. However, when news of the store's actions began to emerge, Pizza Hut's corporate office released a statement saying: "This was clearly an unfortunate situation, and we are very upset by what has transpired in Elkhart, Indiana." Rohr, 28, has supposedly been offered his job back, however, he has not yet accepted the offer.
Pizza Hut managers have the discretion of whether or not to open on holidays like Thanksgiving. Most stores stay closed on this particular holiday, however, the Elkhart store owners decided to remain open. Yet as Rohr told CNN, "there are only two days that those people are guaranteed to have off to spend with their families." Thanksgiving being one of them, Rohr felt that it would be unfair of the store to rob his employees of one of these opportunities. His compassion cost him his job.
Pizza Hut meanwhile expressed that "while the choice as to whether a restaurant should be open or closed on a holiday is handled at the local level by our independent franchisees, we feel strongly that this situation could have been avoided. We respect an employee's decision not to work on a holiday if they so choose, which is why the vast majority of Pizza Huts in America are closed on Thanksgiving."
