With the winner advancing to play the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series, the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates will meet one final time in the Divisional Series in a winner-take-all Game 5. Expected to be one of the best games this postseason, the Cardinals hope they're able to win the decisive game in front of what will certainly be a raucous crowd at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. Making his final preparations for the biggest game of the season, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle believes this game will come down to smart at-bats and cashing in on every opportunity that comes Pittsburgh's way.
"It will be our Game No. 168," Hurdle said. "It will also be now the 24th time we've played the Cardinals. We've played them close. It has been a very respectful challenge series. The game is going to be out there for somebody to win it. You've got to make plays. You've got to execute pitches. You've got to have quality at bats. And every once in a while, something completely apart from that could happen. You don't know whether it could be a rundown. That's what makes it so exciting, I believe."
Sending ace Adam Wainwright to the mound where he'll be opposed by talented rookie Gerrit Cole, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny fully expects his club to once again take a business-like approach to Game 5, noting that the Cardinals are never easy rattled by pressure situations.
"We saw it in Pittsburgh, and I anticipate seeing it tomorrow," Matheny said of his team's ability to stay in the moment and not dwell on tough situations. "They show up like it's another - it's another great day."
With a premier pitching match-up set between a rising rookie and a proven veteran, Game 5 of the 2013 NLDS between the National League Central division rivals should prove to be one of the most entertaining moments of the current MLB season, and it's only the Division Series!
