When a fire broke out at her home in Long Island, New York, Jackie Bonasera's trusted pit bull acted quickly.
Bonasera said she was upstairs blowdrying her hair Friday when she hear the dog known as Cain barking downstairs.
She looked out the front door and saw flames on the garage side of the exterior of her house, according to Newsday.
I ran out of the house and my neighbors came running over, and then I thought about the dog -- I'm like, 'He saved my life, I have to save his,'" Bonasera told NBC New York.
She put her robe over her face and ran back in for Cain before she waited outside for aid and watching her house burn.
The two escaped with no injuries.
Bonasera's daughter, Alexus Stallworth, hailed the dog as a hero and said the events shed a different light on the nature of pit bulls.
"He's a pit bull, too," said Stallworth. "They have such bad reps, but he's such a good boy."
More than 70 firefighters were required to stop the fire. Arson crews are investigating, but thus far do not suspect foul play.
