A Philadelphia teenager was shot with a real gun after he tried to rob a man with a fake gun, police said.

Philadelphia Police said that two teens approached the victim, 21, and his girlfriend while they were walking at around 11 p.m. Sunday, as reported by FOX 29.

Police said one of the teens, 16, pressed what he said was a gun to the man's back and told the man to hand over "his keys, his wallet and any other valuables that he had on him," according to NBC10.

"At that point, the victim began to produce the items that were demanded by the robber, but he was also in possession of a legal firearm," Inspector D.F. Pace told NBC10.

He went on to reveal that as the victim pulled out the items for the teen, he turned around and shot him in the leg.

The boy was taken to the hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound. The other teen ran away on foot. The man was uninjured, and was able to collect his valuables after they were dropped on the street.

"After the victim opened fire on the robbers, that gun was dropped and it was recovered by police and it is now in police custody and we now know it to be a fake gun," Pace told NBC10. "But again, having been pressed into the victim's back, there would have been no way for the victim to have known that."

Police said that the hunt for the second suspect continues, and the investigation remains ongoing.
