Peter Navarro is set to become the first person convicted for charges related to the January 6 riots to serve in the incoming Donald Trump White House. Concretely, he will serve as "Senior Counselor for Trade and Manufacturing," the president-elect said in a statement on Wednesday.

"I am pleased to announce that Peter Navarro, a man who was treated horribly by the Deep State, or whatever else you would like to call it, will serve as my Senior Counselor for Trade and Manufacturing. During my First Term, few were more effective or tenacious than Peter in enforcing my two sacred rules, Buy American, Hire American," reads a passage of the statement.

Trump went on to say that the position "leverages Peter's broad range of White House experience, while harnessing his extensive Policy analytic and Media skills." "His mission will be to help successfully advance and communicate the Trump Manufacturing, Tariff, and Trade Agendas."

Navarro, a top trade aide for Trump during his first term, was in prison for about four months after defying a congressional subpoena from the House committee investigating the January 6 riots. He was convicted on two counts of contempt of Congress. One count was for failing to produce documents related to the investigation, and the other was for skipping his deposition before the select panel investigating the attack. Hours after his release on July 17, he spoke at the Republican National Convention.

After Trump lost the 2020 presidential election, Navarro was among those who spread false claims about the Republican being stolen through widespread voter fraud. He has also been a staunch supporter of the president-elect's protectionist policies.
