Argentina’s Perito Moreno glacier, also known as the White Giant had been showing signs of a possible collapse since February, so it was only a matter of time until something big happened. That is why thousands of tourists and locals flocked to the site and waited for nature to put on a show. Last Thursday, around 10.56 am, the roof of one of the ice tunnels caved in and massive chunks of ice fell into the 18-mile long river, while over 4,000 people watched.
Partial ruptures of the glacier in the City of El Calafate, in the Santa Cruz Province began around March 8, and since ruptures happen, more or less, every four years, a collapse of the sort hadn’t happened since 2012. However, that one was not recorded because it happened at dawn. In this occasion the arch of ice that fell was 250 metres wide and 70 metres high!
The , covers 250 square kilometres, and is the world's third largest concentration of fresh water.
