Pepsi Flavored Cheetos

Pepsi flavored Cheetos have hit the Japanese consumer market and the new concoction is certainly a unique one. The off-beat snack was created by Frito-Lay and has been named Frito Lay Cheetos x Pepsi Shuwa Shuwa Cola Corn Snack. What was the motivation behind the unique snack? "Consumers all want something absolutely new that's never been seen before," says Lynn Dornblaser, new products guru at the research firm Mintel. Preliminary reports had stated that the cheetos boast a sweet cola flavor and that they fizz in the consumer's mouth. If you're hoping to get your hands on a bag in a country other than Japan, then we have to burst your bubble: It won't be happening. PepsiCo spokesman Jeff Dahncke told the Los Angeles Times, "The answer is no," when asked if the product would be coming to the United States.

Being adventurous foodies, we decided to purchase a bag of these chips on eBay--for a whopping $8 including shipping--and passed them around the newsroom to get the reactions of our fellow reporters. The bag came in relatively quickly (2 weeks) and in excellent condition. About 70 percent of the reporters were game to try this questionable snack and the general consensus was negative. Immigration Reporter David Iaconangelo found the cheetos to be a "cornucopia of incongruent sensations." The general consensus of the Pepsi Cheetos was pretty much the same: they sucked. "I found the cheetos dreadful--It was not a pleasant experirence and I was more than grossed out by the flavor of these little abominations," said Staff Reporter Amanda Schiavo.

That said, not all the reviews were bad! "Pepsi Cheetos taste like tangy breakfast cereal. I'd like to pour milk on them and see how it goes," said iDigital Reporter Mo Mozuch. It was the sweetness in the snack that made the cheetos unsavory to many of the reporters who tried it out. In fact, the cheetos managed to fizz in our mouths similar to the carbonated sensation that a soda gives. Many reporters noted a citrus flavor that left a long-lasting after taste and others said it tasted like Alka-Seltzer. "They remind me of these Mexican candies called Selz Soda, that taste like lemon and have this fizz effect, equivalent of drinking an Alka-Seltzer," said Latin Times Editor-in-Chief Ernesto Sanchez. "It's not a pleasant experience."
