A New York City man has been arrested in Philadelphia for allegedly knifing his co-worker after attempting to rape her, and then brutally stabbing her two sons in the head as the young boys tried to stop him from raping their mother.
Hengjian Ni turned himself in on Sunday afternoon, hours after attacking the family- all of Asian descent like the suspect - inside a home in the 3200 block of Knorr Street in the Mayfair neighborhood, according to authorities.
Police said they responded to the home after a neighbor called reporting about a person with a weapon just after 2 pm local time on Sunday, March 6.
The 37-year-old mother-of-two was found with multiple stab wounds throughout her body, according to a police report.
The second victim, the woman’s 15-year-old son, was stabbed twice in the back of the head.
The third victim, the woman’s 10-year-old son, sustained one knife wound to the back of the head and another to his left leg.
The woman remained in critical condition at Frankford-Torresdale Hospital on Tuesday, while her both sons were listed in stable condition at the same hospital, reports said.
A neighbor said she was standing in her driveway when she saw the two brothers running down the street covered in blood.
"When the second kid came running out, he was covered in blood from like head all the way down to his stomach," the neighbor told CBS Philadelphia.
The boys said they were stabbed by their mother’s colleague when they tried to shield her from his knife blows, the report said.
The neighbor said she then saw the suspected attacker walk out of the victims' home.
"The guy came out, I didn’t know what he was going to do, if he was going to try to attack [the children] again," the neighbor added. "So I said, 'Run, run, run, inside my house,' So we all ran inside my basement."
The neighbor called out to the woman, and she said the mother came stumbling down the steps.
"She said, 'Help me. Help me.' She came struggling down the steps," the neighbor, who did not want to be named, said.
"I told her, 'I called the ambulance. Hold on stay there.' She was like, 'My sons. My sons.' I was like, 'I have them. I have them. They’re safe.'"
Ni went to Northeast Detectives at the 15th District headquarters to turn himself in. He was taken to the hospital, where he was identified as the suspect.
Ni was charged with three counts each of attempt to commit murder, simple assault, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, and one count each of attempt to commit rape, possessing instruments of crime, and burglary.
He remains in police custody.
