A patient has been reported dead after a nurse allegedly administered her the wrong injection without consulting a doctor in a private hospital in Govandi, Mumbai, India.

The patient, identified as Shabana Sayyad, 36, reportedly visited Mannat Hospital on Oct. 2, 2020, for a consultation as she was suffering from a serious fever. However, at the facility, Nafisha Mohammad Aslam Shaikh, who was working as a nurse at the hospital, proceeded to jab her with an unspecified injection and gave her some medicine without consulting one of the physicians who were on duty.

Two days after the injection, Sayyad’s condition worsened and she contracted an infection at the same spot where she was administered the injection, Hindustan Times reported.

As the infection worsened, Sayyad returned to the hospital and Nafisha gave her more medicine, again without consulting the doctors. A few days later, on Oct. 6, 2020, Sayyad and her family visited the hospital, met with a doctor, and asked the physician about the reason behind her severe swelling and infection. The doctor immediately decided to operate on the victim to treat the infection but discharged her from the facility on the same day.

When the victim’s condition worsened even after the operation, Sayyad's family members rushed her to KEM hospital on Oct. 9, 2020, where she died while undergoing treatment.

Following Sayyad's death, the victim's family demanded an investigation into the incident. Based on the family's demand, a panel of directors, including three doctors of JJ hospital, examined the victim’s medical report and arrived at the conclusion that the woman's death may have been directly related to the unauthorized injection she was administered.

Police have recorded the statement of the victim’s sister Shehnaz Ansari, 45, and registered a case under Section 304 (II) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against doctor Rehan Khan, owner of Mannat Hospital, and the nurse Nafisha.

“We have also recorded the statement of Dr. Rehan Khan, owner of the hospital but he claimed that he had called a visiting doctor, Kazim Khan who operated on the victim. We have been now investigating that part also to find out who conducted the operation,” said Senior Inspector Kishore Gayke of the Shivaji Nagar Police Station.

Meanwhile, it was found that Nafisha had not submitted any document proving her qualifications as a nurse while she was working at the hospital.
