On Friday a train traveling near Paris carrying over 100 people derailed crashing into a station killing at least seven people and injuring over a dozen.

The Washington Post says this is France's deadliest train crash in recent years. The train's cars went sliding toward the station crushing the roof above the platform. There was a report saying passengers were still trapped on board the derailed train but officials in Paris have not commented about that to any news organization.

Reuters is reporting that at least nine of the 12 people hurt in the train derailment are critically wounded. The local prefect, Michel Fuzeau told Reuters it is likely the number of dead will rise.

The cause of the Paris train derailment is still unknown. The chairmen of the SNCF told reporters at the scene of the crash they do not know what caused the accident. However he did say the train appeared to be traveling unusually fast.

Witnesses at the crash site spoke with various French newspapers. They all describe hearing loud crashing and people crying.

"I heard a loud noise. A cloud of sand covered everything," witness, Bazgua El Mehdi, a passenger on a nearby train, told Le Parisien newspaper. "Then the dust dissipated. I thought it was a freight train, but then we saw the first casualties ... Many passengers on the (train) were crying."

Two cars traveling on the track, numbers three and four were the cars that first derailed. Following this the two cars knocked into the rest of the train cars forcing them off the tracks as well.

The police and other investigators are looking into the crash. Thoughts and prayers go out to those injured and the families of the seven people killed.
