Environmental officers in Spain have stepped up their efforts to find a large feline, believed to be a panther that is on the loose in Berja in the south of Spain. Jacinto Navarro, an environmental officer told the Bangkok Post "from all the witnesses' descriptions it seems it is a black panther but we're not sure. This very morning, almond farmers called us saying they were stunned to see this animal walking around...we guess that someone who had the animal as a pet let it loose in this area."
There are no reports of a panther missing from a zoo, which is what led officers to believe the animal was somebody's pet. There are also no reports of aggression on the part of the panther. Authorities are eager to find the large cat and make sure it does not have the chance to hurt anybody. Authorities set up two large cages with fresh meat to lure the big cat but caught nothing more than a fox and a house cat.
"The absolute priority of the team of three environmental officers and three police was to catch the feline alive," Navarro said. On Friday the teams added additional cages and night vision cameras in the hopes of catching the animal. The officers' goal is to tranquilize the panther and hand it over to a zoo in Tabernas, Spain. The zoo offered to take the animal when it is captured.
