Match Preview

Martinique may not have a bunch of household names up and down the roster but the French overseas club does have a few talents capable of striking fear into any opponent.

Head coach Patrick Cavelan guides a Martinique team making its fourth appearance in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Quarterfinalists in the 2000 tournament, the 2013 team is led by Frederic Piquionne, one of only 4 players on the team playing professional club ball away from the national team.

A member of Major League Soccer's Portland Timbers, the 34-year-old striker continues to expand his talents since he joined the MLS squad this season. In addition to the services of Piquionne, Les Matinino will rely on their top offensive threat in forward Kevin Parsemain. The 25-year-old has been a member of the national team since 2008 where he's recorded a total of 22 goals.

Fabrice Reuperne may also find added responsibilities since it was his goal in stoppage time from 25 yards out that left the Canadian national team stunned to start the tournament. Though the victory over the 2000 Gold Cup champion was certainly a high point for Martinique, the task undoubtedly takes a step up heading into Thursday night's contest against Panama.

The Panamanian nationals received 2 goals from Gabriel Torres in their opening match against Mexico. Closing out El Tri in 2-1 fashion, Panama hopes a second-straight Gold Cup victory will propel them toward advancement.

Along with players like Roman Torres and Alberto Quintero, Panama certainly possesses the talent to wind up the top team in Group A, especially since they've already taken down six-time Cup champion Mexico.

Despite being outshot by El Tri in the opener, Panama used their opportunities to the full advantage, capitalizing on goals at the 7 and 48-minute marks. If they're able to find a successful balance once again, expect Panama to start the tournament with a 2-0 record.
