It was a slow start for both Panama and the desperate Canada in Sunday's match of the Gold Cup, with Canada looking for a win in order to advance to the quarterfinals. Canada's hopes were quashed by a relatively uneventful game scoring-wise in which Panama stomped the Canadians, who leave the competition with no wins, in Denver.
There were a great many opportunities with scoring, all of which failed to connect. The most notable stars were Panama's Rolando Blackburn and Blas Antonio Perez. The two battled it out and looked to be in top shape to score, but no such luck. Blackburn kept Milan Borjan on his feet toward the end of the first 45, with a shot at the 35 minute mark. Perez skillfully weaved around the defense, but he wasn't very lucky when it came to controlling the ball as the majority of his shots went wide of the net.
The second period was not much different as the scoring opportunities were high, but the goal scoring itself was abysmal. Panama clearly dominated the majority of the game, giving the opponent's defenses a run for its money and sending the Canadians packing. Canada lost its first two Gold Cup games, 1-0 to Martinique and 2-0 to Mexico. Panama has already secured a spot in the quarterfinals and will play again next week at the start of the quarterfinals.
