MIAMI - The 2024 Oscar nominations offered a compelling mix of predictable choices and unexpected surprises, reflecting the diverse dynamics and nature of the film industry in the Barbenheimer era. America Ferrera and Domingo Colman were included in the Best Supporting Actress and Best Actor categories. The afro-latino actor nomination could make history as the first Latino to win in this category since José Ferrer in 1953.
The Spanish movie "The Snow Society" garnered two nominations, and Mexican cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto was also nominated, as was Becky G's song "The Fire Inside." Also from Spain, "Robot Dreams" received a nod in the Best Animated Film category.
Lily Gladstone's nomination for best actress in Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon" is another historic first, making her the inaugural Native American nominated for a competitive acting Oscar. In the film, she portrays Mollie Burkhart, entangled in a sinister plot.
Netflix remains a formidable contender in the Oscar race, securing 18 nominations this year—the highest for any studio—with Apple, Searchlight (a Disney unit), and Universal trailing with 13 each. Despite its impressive nominations, Netflix's prospects for the coveted best picture award remain uncertain as it intensifies promotional efforts for "Maestro".
Many nominees met industry expectations, like the nominations of Christopher Nolan, Robert Downey Jr., and Cillian Murphy for their work in "Oppenheimer," as well as the inclusion of the Spanish masterpiece "The Society of Snow" in the Best Foreign Film category.
However, the notable snubs were shocking. The biggest and most surprising was the exclusion of Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie from the Best Director and Best Actress categories for their work in "Barbie," as well as the Dua Lipa song from the same movie.
The 2024 Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 10, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles. Jimmy Kimmel is returning as host for the second consecutive year and his fourth time emceeing overall.
